Abstract

Pressure injury remains a common and largely preventable complication of critical illness. This narrative review examines the components of prevention bundles reported in critical care over the past decade and the evidence for each in isolation. Risk assessment scales perform poorly on their own; repositioning schedules, support surface selection and prophylactic sacral dressings each show benefit, and the effect of bundles exceeds the sum of documented individual components. Reported implementation failures cluster around repositioning during haemodynamic instability, where written protocols rarely give usable guidance. We identify this as the priority gap for future protocol development.
